About HedgeMountain
Hedge funds raise money privately, so most of them never appear in the news or on investing sites. Yet nearly every one files public notices with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. HedgeMountain gathers those filings into one place, so investors, advisors, allocators and the press can find funds of every size, including the emerging managers that larger databases tend to miss.
The site lists 11,580 hedge funds and 3,838 hedge fund management firms. Anyone can search it without an account.
Where the data comes from
- Form D notices, filed when a fund sells securities in a private offering: fund name, location, amount raised, number of investors, minimum investment and related persons. We check EDGAR for new and amended filings every day.
- Form ADV, the registration filing for investment advisers: firm assets under management, number of hedge funds, employees, website and disciplinary disclosures.
- Form 13F holdings reports, used to estimate the return of each large manager's disclosed U.S. stock portfolio. These estimates come from public 13F data only and are not the return of any fund. How the estimates work
- Verified returns reported directly by managers of funds offered under Rule 506(c), which permits public advertising. Funds offered under Rule 506(b) are listed without figures.
Data is republished as filed, with formatting changes only. HedgeMountain does not verify it. If something is wrong, the fund's own filing is the place to fix it, and managers can claim their listing to add context.
How HedgeMountain makes money
Searching is free. Managers can pay for a customized profile, for monthly reporting of their returns to industry databases, or for clearly labeled sponsored placements. Payment never changes a fund's position in search results or rankings, and HedgeMountain receives no compensation tied to any investment in a listed fund. Pricing for managers
Who runs it
HedgeMountain is operated by Growth Preservation LLC. Its principal, Ward McKinley, is also the principal of Copernicus Investment Manager LLC, the investment manager of Copernicus Hedge Fund LP. HedgeMountain promotes that fund in placements labeled “Sponsored · Operator's fund,” which is a conflict of interest. Copernicus is listed and ranked by the same rules as every other fund.
What HedgeMountain is not
HedgeMountain is an information service. It is not a broker-dealer, investment adviser or funding portal, does not offer or sell securities, does not recommend investments and does not pass visitors' details to any fund. Investments in private funds are speculative, illiquid and generally limited to accredited investors or qualified purchasers. Full disclosures · Terms of Use
